Cooking with Children
Welcome to Children Cooking. Sometimes when people think of cooking with children, they think of having a big mess in their kitchen and then decide to just cook themselves or not cook at all. Cooking is becoming a lost art. Yes, that’s right I said ART. Cooking can be a form of creative expression. You don’t always have to have a paint brush in your hand to consider yourself artistic.
My two older children do not enjoy cooking and my two younger children enjoy cooking. The younger ones actually get angry if I make something “fun” without them in the kitchen. The competition between them can get to be exhausting sometimes, but we’re working on that.
Why do my older two children not enjoy cooking? Maybe I didn’t allow them to experiment enough. Maybe I shooed them out of the kitchen when they were younger because I didn’t want a mess. They are teens now and know HOW to cook. They just prefer to come in the kitchen and say “What’s for dinner?” instead of actually making something. They fix their own lunches every day, but don’t enjoy the creative process of cooking that the younger two enjoy.
A catering friend of ours comes over and enjoys cooking with the younger two children. They have made all kinds of concoctions. He even taught my 13 year old daughter how to make pie crust. She now makes pie crust all the time – WITHOUT A RECIPE! How does she do that?
Hopefully you will get some good ideas from this blog on how to cook with your children and how to cook for your children. The obesity rate in America is at alarming levels. I believe we need to get back to cooking real food without the fuss instead of using so many convenience or fast foods.
Come along for the ride and let me know if there is something you would like to know about how to cook with and for your children.
